Our tour takes us to the tip of Manhattan Island,
where the first European explorers, the Dutch, established
the settlement of New Amsterdam. Three centuries later a bit
of the 17th century street plan remains within the thriving financial
community that now inhabits the same space. Close by, on new land
that was created during the 1970s from dirt excavated
for the World Trade Center, is the carefully planned neighborhood
of Battery Park City.
We'll begin our walk at the 19th century United States Custom
House,
today the home of the National Museum of the American Indian,
part of the Smithsonian Institution. The Museum is located near
the South Ferry stop of the numbers 1 and 9 subway lines, the
Bowling Green stop of the numbers 4 and 5, the last stop of the
M1, M6, and M15 buses, and the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
There's more history in this small area than we can possibly cover,
so this is a selection of some highlights.
